The roots of Janata Dal can be traced back to the Congress Socialist Party (CSP), formed in 1934 within the Indian National Congress by leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Acharya Narendra Deva, and Yusuf Meherally. The movement combined India’s freedom struggle with the ideals of social justice, equality, and democratic empowerment.
During the Quit India Movement, socialist leaders played a crucial role in organizing resistance against British rule after many national leaders were arrested. Through underground networks and youth mobilization, they helped sustain the independence movement and strengthened people’s participation in the struggle for freedom.
After independence, socialist leaders continued advocating for federalism, equality, and the rights of backward and marginalized communities. During the Indian Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, they led nationwide democratic movements defending civil liberties and accountable governance.
This political tradition later evolved into Janata Dal under V. P. Singh. The implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations in 1990 became a landmark step toward social justice, expanding opportunities and representation for OBC communities across India.
Our party draws inspiration from the democratic, socialist ideals of
Mahatma Gandhi, Acharya Vinoba bhave, Acharya Narendradev, Dr. BR Ambedkar
Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia etc. We uphold a vision of democratic
socialism rooted in decentralisation where power flows to local self-governments,
ensuring participatory democracy and accountability. Guided by Gandhian prin-
ciples of Gram Swaraj, we emphasize empowering villages and urban local bod-
ies as the foundation of governance. At the same time, we remain firmly commit-
ted to social justice, striving to eliminate caste, economic and social inequalities
through affirmative action, inclusive policies and equal opportunities, ensuring
dignity and justice for all sections of society.
